§00Fault check

Is it an emergency?

FAULT CHECKQ1 / 4

Can you smell burning, or see smoke, sparks or scorch marks?

§01Typical emergencies

Typical emergencies

  1. 1.1Total or partial loss of power
  2. 1.2A trip switch or RCD that will not reset
  3. 1.3Burning smells, scorch marks or buzzing from sockets or the fuse board
  4. 1.4Exposed, damaged or water-affected wiring
  5. 1.5Electrical faults stopping a business from trading

§02Notes

Electrical faults rarely happen at a convenient time. Wirrelec's emergency call outs run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so help is there at night and at weekends, not just during office hours.

If you can smell burning or see damage, keep clear of it and, only if it is safe to do so, switch off at the fuse board. Then call. There is no charge just for coming out, so cost should never be the reason to leave a fault until morning.

§03Technical notes

What you need to know

3.1What to do first

  • If you smell burning or see smoke, sparks or scorch marks, keep clear and call 999 if there is a fire
  • Only if it is safe, switch the power off at the main switch on the fuse board
  • Do not touch anything wet, damaged or hot
  • Unplug appliances on the affected circuit if you can do it safely
  • Then call 07301 570755

3.2Why the power keeps tripping

Usually caused byWhat it means
A faulty applianceOne item leaking current to earth. Unplug everything on the circuit and reset to find it.
Water getting inLeaks, outside sockets and lights, or condensation reaching cables or fittings.
An overloaded circuitToo many high-power appliances on one circuit at once.
Damaged cableOften from drilling, nails or rodents, and hidden in walls or floors.
A failing fuse boardOld boards and worn breakers or RCDs can trip without an obvious cause.

3.3Emergency or not?

Treat it as an emergency if there is any sign of burning, any exposed or damaged wiring, water near electrics, or a total loss of power you cannot restore. A single light not working or a socket that has stopped can usually wait for a booked visit, but if you are unsure, ring and ask. There is no call out charge.
