§01Signs a fuse board needs replacing

Signs a fuse board needs replacing

  1. 1.1Rewireable fuses in pull-out carriers instead of switches
  2. 1.2No RCDs, the switches with a test button
  3. 1.3A wooden box, or a cracked or scorched case
  4. 1.4Breakers that trip often with no obvious cause
  5. 1.5No room or protection for a new circuit
  6. 1.6An EICR that recommends it

§02Notes

Many older homes still have fuse boards without RCD protection, the device that cuts the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth. Current wiring regulations, BS 7671, require RCD protection for most circuits in a home.

Replacing a consumer unit is notifiable work under Part P. Wirrelec notifies it for you, tests every circuit before it goes back on, and gives you an Electrical Installation Certificate.

§03Technical notes

What you need to know

3.1What a modern consumer unit has

FeatureWhy it matters
RCD protectionCuts the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, for example through a person
Circuit breakersSwitches that trip instead of fuses that blow, and can simply be reset
A non-combustible caseRequired for new consumer units in homes since January 2016, usually metal, to contain a fire

3.2What happens on the day

The power is off while the old board comes out and the new one goes in. Each circuit is then tested before it is switched back on.

Testing sometimes turns up faults in the existing wiring that the old board was hiding. We tell you what we found and why before doing anything more.

§05Questions

Fuse board replacement: common questions

5.1Does my fuse board need replacing?
Not always. Plenty of older boards are still safe. An EICR, or a look from an electrician, will tell you whether yours needs replacing.
5.2Will I get a certificate?
Yes. A consumer unit replacement is certified with an Electrical Installation Certificate and notified to building control under Part P.
5.3Are you registered?
Yes. Wirrelec is NAPIT registered, so our work is assessed against the current wiring regulations, BS 7671.
5.4Do you cover my area?
We cover the whole Wirral including Wallasey, Birkenhead, Bebington, Heswall and West Kirby, plus Liverpool and Merseyside. If you are not sure, call 07301 570755 and ask.
