§01Emergency lighting work

Emergency lighting work

  1. 1.1Periodic emergency lighting tests
  2. 1.2Replacing failed fittings and batteries
  3. 1.3New emergency lighting installations
  4. 1.4Testing alongside fire alarms and EICRs

§02Notes

Emergency lighting has to come on when the power goes, and keep escape routes lit long enough for people to get out. BS 5266 is the standard that covers it, including regular testing.

Fittings and batteries fail quietly, so a light that looks fine may not work when it is needed. Regular testing finds those before an inspection, or an emergency, does.

§03Technical notes

What you need to know

3.1What emergency lighting does

TypePurpose
Escape route lightingLights corridors, stairs and exits so people can get out
Open area lightingAlso called anti-panic lighting. Lights larger spaces so people can reach an escape route
High-risk task lightingLets people make a dangerous process safe before leaving

3.2The testing routine

BS 5266-1 sets out how emergency lighting should be tested. A brief monthly test checks every fitting comes on when the mains is cut, and an annual test checks each one runs for its full rated duration, usually three hours. Results go in a logbook.

  • Monthly: a short function test of every fitting
  • Annually: a full duration test
  • After each test: replace failed lamps and batteries, and record it

3.3Maintained or non-maintained?

Maintained fittings are lit all the time and stay on when the power fails, which suits places like cinemas and some venues. Non-maintained fittings only come on in a power failure, which is common in offices and shops. Which you need depends on the building and its use.
