§01Typical upgrades

Typical upgrades

  1. 1.1Swapping old lighting for LED
  2. 1.2Lighting controls, timers and occupancy sensors
  3. 1.3Better control of heating and plant
  4. 1.4Advice on where energy is being wasted

§02Notes

Lighting and plant that run longer than they need to are two of the most common ways electricity is wasted, in homes and in businesses. Upgrading the fittings and adding sensible controls can cut that waste without changing how a building is used.

§03Technical notes

What you need to know

3.1The end of fluorescent tubes

Since September 2023, most fluorescent tubes can no longer be sold in Great Britain. Buildings still running on fluorescent fittings will find replacement tubes harder to get, which makes this a sensible time to switch to LED.

3.2Where the savings come from

UpgradeWhy it saves
LED lightingUses far less electricity than older fittings for the same light, and lasts much longer
Occupancy sensorsLights turn off in rooms nobody is using
Timers and controlsPlant and lighting run only when the building is open
Daylight sensorsLights dim when there is enough natural light
