§01Signs a rewire may be needed

Signs a rewire may be needed

  1. 1.1Old rubber or fabric-covered cable, or round-pin sockets
  2. 1.2A fuse board with rewireable fuses or no RCDs
  3. 1.3Scorch marks, warm sockets or a burning smell
  4. 1.4Lights that flicker or dim when appliances switch on
  5. 1.5An EICR that recommends rewiring

§02Notes

Wiring does not last forever. Older cable insulation breaks down, and installations put in decades ago were not designed for the number of appliances a modern home runs.

A rewire is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. As a NAPIT registered contractor, Wirrelec notifies it for you, and you get an Electrical Installation Certificate to keep with the house.

§03Technical notes

What you need to know

3.1Part P and your paperwork

In England, a rewire has to be notified to building control under Part P of the Building Regulations. A registered contractor can notify the work for you.

Keep the Electrical Installation Certificate you are given. You will be asked for it when you sell the house, and it is useful evidence for insurers.

3.2Check before you commit

An EICR shows the condition of the existing wiring circuit by circuit. It tells you whether a full rewire is needed, or whether repairs and a new consumer unit will do.

§05Questions

House rewiring: common questions

5.1Do I need a full rewire?
Not always. An EICR shows the condition of the existing wiring, so you know whether a rewire is needed before committing to one.
5.2Will I get a certificate?
Yes. A rewire is certified with an Electrical Installation Certificate and notified to building control under Part P.
5.3Are you registered?
Yes. Wirrelec is NAPIT registered, so our work is assessed against the current wiring regulations, BS 7671.
5.4Do you cover my area?
We cover the whole Wirral including Wallasey, Birkenhead, Bebington, Heswall and West Kirby, plus Liverpool and Merseyside. If you are not sure, call 07301 570755 and ask.
