Fixed wire testing covers the fixed installation: everything wired in, from the distribution boards to the sockets and lights. Plug-in appliances are not part of it. They are checked separately.

§03Technical notes

What you need to know

3.1The law

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require employers and the self-employed to maintain electrical systems so they do not cause danger, so far as is reasonably practicable. The regulations do not set a testing interval. Regular inspection and testing to BS 7671 is the usual way to show the installation is being maintained.

Insurers and landlords of commercial premises often ask to see a current report too.

3.2How often

IET Guidance Note 3 recommends maximum intervals by type of premises. The inspector can set a shorter one, and the report states when the next test is due.

PremisesRecommended maximum interval
Offices and shops5 years
Industrial premises3 years
Swimming pools1 year
Caravan parks1 year
Construction sites3 months

3.3Planning it around trading

  • Agree which areas can lose power, and when
  • Test critical circuits outside opening hours where possible
  • Keep fire alarms and emergency lighting working throughout
  • Get the report handed over when the job is done

§05Questions

Fixed wire testing: common questions

5.1Is fixed wire testing the same as an EICR?
Yes. Fixed wire testing is the name often used for an EICR on commercial and industrial premises. The result is an Electrical Installation Condition Report.
5.2Can you test outside our opening hours?
We plan testing around your trading hours. Power goes off in stages, circuit by circuit, not all at once.
5.3Are you registered?
Yes. Wirrelec is NAPIT registered, so our work is assessed against the current wiring regulations, BS 7671.
5.4Do you cover my area?
We cover the whole Wirral including Wallasey, Birkenhead, Bebington, Heswall and West Kirby, plus Liverpool and Merseyside. If you are not sure, call 07301 570755 and ask.
